Halloway Inn Accommodation Stagecoach Line

Here on the corner of Third and High Streets sits the former Halloway Tavern, the local inn where passengers on the Accommodation Stage Line likely stayed while coach drivers and horses were rested in Waynesville. (This is now a private home, so please don’t disturb its residents.)

Built by David Halloway around 1805, this was the first tavern on the route of the Accommodation Line. By 1814 Quaker Joel Wright purchased the structure. Henry Clay stayed here in 1825, and Charles Dickens in 1842. Other prominent owners were temperance advocate Paulina Butterworth, as well as Findley and Laura Brown.
